There are so many lovely modern buildings out here in Brisbane, from city apartment blocks to beach-side houses, but it's not all new. Below are some photos of the Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm - no photos of the front facade this time - you can only see that when you are travelling on the river. Unfortunately there were no exhibitions inside this time either but the building itself is fantastic. It's a hub for theatre film & music, and also has a great restaurant with vie
By way of an explanation, a Queenslander is a style of traditional house from QLD, popular in the 1920's & 30's. They were made of wood and raised off the ground on stilts (so air can circulate to keep cool), Verandas (or decks) are also a feature. Here are a few we have seen on our travels on this trip.
Went to see a fascinating exhibition at the State Library of Queensland yesterday called 'Home: a suburban obsession'. It featured Frank and Eunice Corley’s photographic collection. In a world before 'Google Street View', during the 1960's & 1970's they drove around Queensland in a Cadillac photographing peoples homes, later to return with prints inserted into a calendar to sell to the residents. A unique and fascinating collection. By
These Bird of Paradise flowers growing in the garden outside the apartment where we are staying in Brisbane this week remind me of our days designing printed textiles for USA menswear - these, along with hibiscus were flowers that featured on Hawaiian prints...and yes, beyond the flowers we are fortunate to look out on a sandy beach!
Before we left for a family holiday in Australia I had just enough time to create some new homage to Valentine day collages. No time unfortunately to get them produced as cards but I can order some when I get back. We all need 'love' in our lives - not just on Valentine's day!
...and what is Maxwell Bill you might ask? Well it is a lovely new shop that I discovered in Kettering just before Xmas. I took them a collection of my prints and cards last week and even before I had got home they had already sold a print! This one: You can't ask for better than that! Visit their website here
